I get this question all the time, let me answer it…
As a proper tech nerd, I’ve tried everything.
When I got my first job in cybersecurity, I treated myself to a beefy gaming PC. I also thought the GPU might come in handy for password-cracking tools like Hashcat.
…It was overkill 💀
I soon hated the idea of being chained to a desk, so I bought an ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 Laptop. This way, I could do my cybersecurity development work on the go.
…Windows in sleep mode is terrible 💀
Then, I had the crazy idea of using an iPad and streaming my main PC to it with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
…I did this exactly once 💀
I’ve even installed Kali Linux on a Steam Deck, thinking it could be some sort of covert hacking device.
…I used it for about 8 minutes 💀
Finally, I’ve leaned into what my day job has provided me all these years, sold my Laptop and ipad and bought a MacBook… I love it.
The 15-inch version of this one to be specific.
Do you need a MacBook? Absolutely, categorically not. It’s a luxury.
What you really need from your device are just two things:
Virtualization capability
The ability to connect to a cloud environment
You Need a Raspberry Pi
A Raspberry Pi is an incredibly versatile and affordable tool that’s perfect for beginners in cybersecurity. Here’s why:
Affordable: At a fraction of the cost of most devices, a Raspberry Pi is budget-friendly, making it accessible for students and hobbyists alike.
Portable: Its small size means you can easily carry it around, creating a compact, mobile hacking lab or development environment.
Learning Linux: The Raspberry Pi runs on Linux-based operating systems like Raspberry Pi OS or Kali Linux, providing a hands-on way to learn command-line tools and Linux fundamentals.
Let me know what you started with?
Thank you for reading: Keep it secure, keep it light-hearted!
